[edit] Biography
Den was born on a small skylet not far from Echo. He had a congenital defect that resulted in the amputation of both legs below the knees when he was very young. Even though he learned to walk, run, climb and labour wearing his leg prosthetics, he was never seen as a useful member of the family. His older brothers taught him the basics of mechanics and flight, and taught himself aircraft design and engineering.
The family owned a rickety CR-4P that flew the skylet's produce to Echo, as well as several wrecked CR-4Ps used as spares. Young Den went on these trips to Echo as often as possible and fell in love with the idea of Flight School and owning his own plane.
As he became more proficient in mechanics and engineering he took on a personal project of restoring one of the wrecked planes to flying condition. In Echo he bought and scrounged all the parts he needed and worked on the plane. His family humoured him, but his father declared that "Den gone batty, He'll never get that crumbling bastard off the ground." Den proudly wrote 'Crumbling Bastard' on the nose cone of his plane. (He has since named all his planes 'The Crumbling Bastard' no matter how new the plane is.)
Shortly before his 23rd birthday, as he was verging on completing the reconstruction of his plane, a family argument turned poisonous, leaving Den without honour in the eyes of his family and ostracized from the skylet population. He completed the restoration of the CR-4P with the help of his oldest brother - the only member of the family who believed Den had been treated unfairly - 'borrowed' enough fuel to get to Echo, and left the island for the last time.
Den calls no skyland "home;" when asked where he lives, he will point at he cockpit of his ship. He does not want to be famous or make a name for himself. He only wants to fly his ship.
